Southern Car Rally and Treasure Hunt

E-mail Print PDF

In 1989, to encourage greater fellowship between the two San Fernando Rotary Clubs, a car rally and treasure hunt was first staged and the proceeds were shared equally between the clubs for their charitable projects.

As a result of the Clubs’ joint efforts and generous prizes donated by southern businesses, this rally has become a popular annual fund-raising event now known as the Rotary Clubs’ Southern Car Rally and Treasure Hunt which attracts experienced and novice car rally enthusiasts, participants of all ages and families out for a day of fun.

The treasure hunt portion of the rally is traditionally planned to include themes of topical interest to the community. Some of the past themes have been: “Environmental Awareness”, “Know Your Country” and “Road Safety”. The theme chosen for the 1996 rally on May 19th was “Healthy Communities”.

The average net income derived from the rally has been approximately $20,000. Some of the recipients of our share from this fund-raiser have been the Community Chest, Audrey Jeffers Home for the Deaf and The Hope Centre.

Special thanks should be given to Shell Lubricants Caribbean Ltd., the main sponsor of the even from 1989-1993 and ESSO/Grell-Taurel from 1994-present.

To enjoy future success, we hope that Rotarians of both clubs will continue working together in service to promote fellowship and maintain high ethical standards within our clubs.
