The Rotary Club of San Fernando, recognising the plight of many rural primary schools throughout the country, has adopted the Poole R.C. Primary School. This school, like many others, receives only a small government subvention to help run its affairs.
Taking up the challenge, the Club members travelled to Poole on the 5th November, 1995 equipped with material for repainting the school. With the able assistance from teachers, parents and pupils, the task was successfully completed before sunset. A great day of fellowship was had by all attending.
On the same day, prior to bucking down to the work ahead, a presentation of donated stationery supplies was made to the principal, Mrs. Rose V. Blackman. We were pleased to meet with Mr. Horace Williams, District School Supervisor, who was also present to address the gathering.
A further request for assistance in outfitting the school’s choir for the upcoming Music Festival was fulfilled. The Club was happy to be informed that Poole R.C. has won three trophies at the festival.
Rotarians Mike, Shiva, Calvin and Prem ran a bottle stall at the annual bazaar/BBQ and raised $741 for the school.
A television and VCR to help upgrade teaching methods, together with a first aid kit were donated by Rotarians Dr. Lloyd George, Rodney de Freitas and Shivanand Ramlogan respectively. A seven-foot cabinet was made to display the many trophies the school won in the past. Plaques for the Victor and Victrix Ludorum were donated for their school Sports’ Day.
Future plans include book and clothing allowances for those pupils from low-income families. A craft room is to be organized to prepare the post-primary pupils for their future.
The project has helped awaken the spirit of Rotary and enthusiasm amongst club members; this undertaking exemplifies “Rotary in Motion”.
