OF VALUES AND STANDARDS

It certainly can be argued that values and standards are relative things. This, of course, is because individual societies set their own standards based on their own values. Yet, as part of the human race, there must be some basic values and standards that set humanity apart from other species.
In every culture and in every religion, the belief is that man has been created in the likeness of his maker. Whether one is religious, therefore, or only spiritual, his values and standards must be based on what is spiritual if not religious.
Though they do not have the same faculties that were given to mankind, even animals have certain rules by which they live. Strange, in isn’t it? Well, believe it. In the forests, the animals confine themselves to certain specific areas. They move about in specific groups and even have selected mates. If animals have rules and some form of code of conduct, what about man?
In the earliest of times, and even within living memory, people did not depend on written rules or laws in order to conform to acceptable standards of common decency. Even before books were written, there was a certain order in society which was grounded only in practice, but which was adhered to without question. Yet today, with volumes upon volumes of written laws and codes of conduct, breach rather than observance is the order of the day.
While according to religious beliefs, we are living in evil times, “Kal Yug” as it is called in Hinduism that does not mean that man must accept the deterioration that is taking place. There are always choices.
Should we have standards and values or should there be a free for all! The choice is ours.
