ROTARACT

The Week including the 13th March, 2004, which this year is the week of the 7th March, 2004, is, designated World Rotaract Week. The R.I. Board envisages some activity international in scope in which Rotaract Clubs around the world would engage during this week.

Apart from the occasional visits by Rotaractors to our club and vice versa, and the financial assistance that we give to our Rotaract club for leadership training, I do not think that Rotarians generally know a great deal about Rotaract.

The purpose of Rotaract, as set out in the manual of procedure, is to provide an opportunity for young men and women to enhance the knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities, and to promote better relations between all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service”, and the goals are set out as follows:

1. To develop professional and leadership skills;
2. To emphasize respect for the rights of others, based on recognition of the worth of each individual;
3. To recognize the dignity and value of all useful occupations as opportunities to serve;
4. To recognize, practice and promote ethical standards as leadership qualities and vocational responsibilities;
5. To develop knowledge and understanding of the needs, problems and opportunities in the community and worldwide;
6. To provide opportunities for personal and group activities to serve the community and promote international understanding and goodwill toward all people.

When you consider that young persons between the ages of 18 and 30 are exposed to the training as set out above, in a setting as organised as Rotary Clubs are organised, the future of this organisation, that is Rotary, does seem secure. While there is no automatic graduation from Rotaract to Rotary, nor from Interact upwards, there can be no doubt that once individuals in their youth make service to others an important part of their lives, they cannot help but continue along that path of service. Is it any wonder that R I places so much importance of Rotaract and Interact?

Unlike some whose philosophy teaches that tomorrow will take care of itself, Rotary, like all successful businesses, plans for the future, and plans well in advance too.
Makes good sense, Doesn’t it?

President Hendy.
