“WORLD UNDERSTANDING”

Whose Responsibility is it?

RESPONSIBILITY is something that too many people avoid like the plague. The condition is akin to a cancer which grows progressively worse with drastic consequences.
On the superficial level, one might be excused for thinking that what happens in the rest of the world does not affect him. Upon deeper reflection, however, that selfish thinking reveals itself.
Certainly, a man living in Moruga, for example, might be able to feed his family and himself from the bounties of the land and the sea, and thus he may say that he doesn’t need anyone’s help. He may not need electricity, pipe borne water, nor telephone. He may not need to leave Moruga at all, so transportation, good roads and all the other amenities that a civilized society depends upon may not be necessary for his survival. In the real world, however, things are vastly different. In this context, the saying “No Man is an Island” is applicable.

As individual human beings, we are all dependant one upon the other. Even if not for material things, we still depend upon others to so conduct themselves so as to enable us to enjoy the benefits of our endeavours. Whether self imposed or externally enforced, the dependency of the recipient upon a certain level of comfort and security is always there.

Since it is individuals that make up society and societies that make up nations which form part of the world, as part of the whole we must accept that Responsibility for World Peace and Understanding is as much ours individually, as it is that each nations. As Rotarians, and as ambassadors, the responsibility that we undertake is somewhat greater. We are each of us part of that whole, Rotary International, which to our credit has shown the world how we should got about achieving that dream which is still to be realized.
