"WORLD UNDERSTANDING"

An Elusive Dream ?

The desire for World peace is as universal as the desire for food and shelter. Yet in neither cas has there been any acceptable level of achievement. The quest, nevertheless, goes on, but having regard to the relatively low success rate, what is required is a new approach.

From a global perspective, the most promising effort has been the establishment of the United nations. Of course, there are other organisations, which have been formed on regional bases, and which, thought not specifically established with world or even regional peace in mind did not have continues to have some effect in that quarter. It is regrettable, that the effectivness of the United Nations has been called into serious question, as it is by far the most important organization of nations to which the world looked with some hope. The lesson learnt from that unfortunate experience, however, ought to serve as a remainder to all nations, large and small.

In spite of its apparent elusiveness, the quest for the World Peace through Understanding shoukd continue relentlessly. The fate of humanity itself rests to a large extent on hope, and to those who have faith, hope springs eternal. Rotary by its physical presence in 166 countries and through its humanitarian and educational programmes throughtout the world is ample proof that World Peace is a dream, which could come true.
