WHAT SHOULD NON- ROTARIANS KNOW ABOUT ROTARY.
Unlike Rotarians, who ought to strive to know everything about Rotary, it is neither necessary nor practical to expect Non-Rotarians to do likewise. If they could acquire that level of knowledge, Rotary would be the indirect beneficiary.
If one were to attempt to answer the question read in a single sentence, perhaps it would be this:- "Non-Rotarians should know that Rotary is the oldest service organisation, which through its various programmes and individual Rotarians, the quality of life of millions of people arounf the world have been and continue to be enhanced." This, however, while it encapsulates to a large extent what the organisation is, Rotary is much more, and we must ensure that all Non-Rotarians are aware of this fact.
We must use every available opportunity, whether in our businesses, on social occasions or in our everyday dealings with people, to spread the word. That word is Rotary, and once that word is mentioned, those who hear it or read it, should immediately recognize it as the name of the most successful humanitarian organisation in the world.
People generally should know that Rotary's Polio Plus programme is the most ambitious programme ever undertaken by any organisation, governmental or non-governmental. They should know that because of the helping hands of just over 1.2 million Rotarians, the world is much closer to being Polio Free.
People should know that through the helping hands of Rotarians and numerous Rotary Clubs throughtout the world, people of various countries have been able to get basic amenities like water, electricity and transportation.
People should know that annually, through Group Study Exchange and Student Exchange programmes, non-Rotarians are offered the opportunity to visit with the people of the other countries in order to get a better understanding of each other so that World Understanding and Peace may some day become a reality.
People should know that annually, scholarships are awarded to non-Rotarians through the Rotary Foundation.
These fellow Rotarians are some of the things Non-Rotarians ought to know about Rotary; and we are the ones who must spread the word.
