NEMO DAT QUOD NON HABET

The title of this piece is a Latin maxim used in the English civil law, which in English means "one cannot give what one does not have." This maxim of course, if of general application, but the reality of it escapes so many. I would like to apply this maxim to Rotary Information, with specific reference to Rotarians.

As Rotarians there are two basic reasons why we ought to strive to know everything that we possibly could about Rotary;

Firstly, it is impossible to be a good Rotarian without knowing what the organisation is about and what it stands for, and;

Secondly, since the work of Rotary depends upon the support of members of the public, it is necessary that the memebers of the public also must know about the organisation.

We cannot expect to be able to convince other people that Rotary is an organisation worthy of their support unless we are ourselves possessed of the requisite knowledge. There is so much to know about this organisation which is almost 100 years old, that there is hardly a Rotarians who could truly say yhat he/she knows everything there is to know about Rotary. Even the basics require special effort to accomplish. Yet, while we may not be able to achieve 100 %, we ought not to strive for less.

Just as one cannot give what he does not have, so to one cannot educate another or make that other aware of what he himself does not know. Rotary is about sharing; the more we know or have, the more we would be able to share.

Let us as Rotariabs therefore equip ourselves with the knowledge so that we could shre it with the world.
