A PRIVILEGE! NOT A RIGHT

Membership in Rotary is a Privilege, Not a Right. This is a significant fact that requires the strongest emphasis for the benefit of both Rotarians as well as members of the public generally.

The uninformed would probably find it difficult to understand why membership recruitment in Rotary is such a strict and seemingly lengthy process. On the one hand we are seeking to increase our membership, yet on the other hand we are being very selective about the persons we admit to membership.

There are many people who look upon Rotary rather than the Rotarian as the tool. Rotary is and should only be used as the medium through which service is rendered. Rotary offers opportunities to qualified individuals to join with others in service. The emphasis is on QUALIFIED, and it is the duty and responsibility of the Board of Directors and the Club as a whole to ensure that only the right persons are invited to become members.

Unlike most organisations where membership recruitment is through application, in Rotary, the procedure is not initiated by application, but by invitation. While there may be persons who are eminently qualified to be Rotarians and who may want to become Rotarians, they do not have the right to apply to become members. As Rotarians, it is out duty to identify and even seek out the qualified person, and after going through the stipulated procedure, to INVITE such person to become Rotarians. The procedure is via INVITATION, not APPLICATION.

It is not surprising that Rotary has been described as the Rolls Royce of Service Organisations, and as an Elitist Club. While recruitment into Rotary is a selective process, however, Rotarians are not all upper class or wealthy people.Rotarians, nevertheless, are or are required to be financially stable and willing and otherwise Able to Lend a Hand in Service Above Self.
